Still deciding? 10 reasons to choose Swiss Gardens Tap to read
1

Community

Swiss Gardens has an exceptionally strong sense of community. We are a school where everyone matters and everyone belongs, and this resonates through all that we do.

We have excellent links with our local community — collecting 'coats for kids', inviting local pre-schools to rhyme time in our library, bringing Christmas spirit to local care homes. Children at Swiss are prepared to be a part of making the world they want to live in.

2

Values

Our school values Friendship, Respect, Excellence and Enjoyment run through everything we do. We know these four values build children to meet our school vision for them — to be curious, have big dreams and be prepared for an exciting future.

3

Happiness

Swiss Gardens is a kind, caring and happy place to be. Parents, pupils and staff speak highly of the genuine sense of family in our school. Being happy makes us more productive, more resilient, more willing to take risks — all attributes we foster.

“There are warm and positive relationships between staff and children.”

4

Outside space

We take every opportunity to use every inch of our outside space. Dedicated field space on The Meads and a recently re-wilded garden area. Every year group has Beach School in the warmer months, learning outdoors on the shore at Shoreham. Forest school activities in our 'Fresh Air Friday' sessions.

Two playgrounds plus fully covered outside classrooms in Year 1 and EYFS — outside, year-round.

5

Recognising every unique child

We're committed to providing a welcoming, safe and stimulating environment to nurture the needs and achievements of every child. We build their individual talents to enable them to be resilient, capable, confident and self-assured.

From the maths challenge at Christ's Hospital School to representing the school in swimming, to the children's parade, to being the sound tech in the school production — there's something for everyone.

“This is a highly inclusive school.”

6

High academic attainment

High academic standards across Early Years, Phonics, end of Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 assessments. We aim high with low pressure: pupils are well-placed to succeed and resilient enough to face challenges.

A successful primary education is far more than test results. We have high aspirations for all our pupils whatever their talents, and we celebrate progress across every area of the curriculum and beyond.

7

We love reading

Reading is at the very centre of our curriculum. Each topic works outwards from high-quality texts. Children have regular access to our exceptionally welcoming and well-resourced library, with specialist support and lessons from our onsite school librarian.

Daily opportunities to read and be read to — across every year group.

8

Ambitious, engaging curriculum

Through our exciting curriculum, children are stretched to achieve their best. They're encouraged to explore, discover and question. Topics are rich in hands-on experiences — visitors, specialist materials, trips. From mysterious asteroids landed from space (Year 3) to a medieval banquet (Year 2 — castles), every topic has something to hook them in.

“In lessons across the school, pupils are keen and enthusiastic learners. They engage with activities readily, and are keen to get involved and show what they can do.”

9

Excellent transition

We have strong links with the pre-schools that feed into us and the secondary schools our pupils move on to. On starting school we visit each child in their current setting wherever possible. Pre-schools join us for weekly stay-and-play sessions, rhyme time, and to be the audience for our nativity dress rehearsal.

When Year 6 reach the end of their primary journey, we prepare them for the next step with the full offering of transition events — tailored where individual support is needed.

10

We welcome you in

Swiss Gardens has a wonderful family feel. Our doors are always open. Regular events across all year groups — from the Reception 'bug ball' to the Year 4 'Shoreham show' — give you the chance to come in and see the incredible things going on.

Our approachable staff are always on hand to work with you to support your child and get the best from their time with us.

What our parents say

94% of parents would recommend Swiss Gardens to a friend (Parent View, 2023).

“Swiss Gardens is like a family. We have 3 children, one of which has been through the entire school and 2 that are still on their Swiss journey. We couldn't love the school any more than we already do. The teachers are so approachable and make the learning so fun. What I love most about Swiss is how nurturing it is — I wanted my children to walk out of their home and into another homely feel that provides their learning, and Swiss does just that. It's simply magical.”

— Parent, Swiss Gardens

“My daughter is really thriving here. She loves all of the teachers and enjoys going to school. Lots of great after-school clubs — she's gained confidence in football and netball. She also loves the new library!”

— Parent

“My children are really happy attending Swiss Gardens. The staff are welcoming, caring and approachable, and my children have learnt lots and are enjoying their time at Swiss.”

— Parent

“We have been delighted with our time at Swiss Gardens. We cannot fault the love and attention our children have been given. Both have had the best primary school experience possible. We couldn't ask for more!”

— Parent

Common questions

Things parents ask us.

Do I have to live in catchment to apply?

No — you can live anywhere. If you select Swiss Gardens as your first choice and we have spaces available, you'll be allocated a place with us. Catchment affects priority during oversubscription, not eligibility to apply.

How do I apply?

All applications are handled by West Sussex County Council and are made online. Reception 2027 applications are open until 15 January 2027. Start your application →

Can I visit the school?

Yes — visits are warmly welcomed. Tours are led by the Headteacher and can be booked via the office team. Repeat tours are also welcome — bring grandparents, bring your partner, come back twice. Call 01273 453176 or email office@sgprimary.co.uk.

When can my child start school?

Most children start Reception full-time in the first week of September of the term they turn 5. Some prefer to start straight after the summer half-term holiday in June, which we offer. Some prefer to start later — that's fine too, with the deadline being the end of the term they turn 5. Talk to us about what suits your child.

Do you offer wraparound care?

Yes. We run our own breakfast club from 7.45am, staffed by our team (£5 per session). After-school care is run by Play, from 3.15pm until 6pm. See Before & after care for booking and full details.

My child has SEND. How will the transition work?

We have close links with local pre-schools and work hard to make transition as smooth as possible. In spring and summer terms we welcome pre-school starters to play sessions accompanied by their key worker. Where there's an EHCP, we work with the previous setting to share what you've already built. We do home visits and welcome you in to chat about your child long before September. See our SEN information report.

Joining mid-year — what if you're full in my child's year group?

Apply through West Sussex anyway — they hold the waiting list. Call our office and we can tell you where you sit. Places do come up through the year as families move; in-year applications are welcomed. We're happy to show you round at a time that suits you — just contact the office.

How to apply

Applications are handled by West Sussex County Council.

All primary-school admissions in West Sussex go through the county's online application system. We don't process applications ourselves — but our office is happy to chat informally about places and answer your questions.

  • Reception 2027 (children born between 1 Sept 2022 and 31 Aug 2023)
Applications open 5 October 2026. Apply via West Sussex by 11.59pm on 15 January 2027.
  • In-year applications (any other year group, any time)
Apply via West Sussex — see moving school (in-year admissions). Call our office first to ask about availability.
  • Admission arrangements
How places are allocated when a school has more applicants than places: West Sussex admission arrangements 2027 to 2028 (other years).
  • Appeals
If your child isn't offered a place, you can make an admissions appeal through West Sussex.
  • You don't need to live in catchment — we welcome applications from across the area, subject to places.
