Key Stage 1 · Ages 5–7

Year 1 & 2.

Three mixed Year 1 & 2 classes — Emily Gravett, Dapò Adeola and Sophy Henn — working through a two-year topic cycle. This year the children go from Healthy Me and Fire, Fire! to Ice Worlds, the woods, transport and our precious planet.

The team

Three classes, three children's authors.

Our three Year 1 & 2 classes each contain a mix of Year 1 and Year 2 children — and each is named after a much-loved children's author whose books we read together throughout the year. Our Year 1 & 2 teaching assistants are Mrs Neal, Miss Reed, Mrs Dobson and Mrs Coleman. They work across the Year 1 & 2 classes rather than in one class, so they can go where they are needed.

By the end of the year

What success looks like.

The National Curriculum sets out what children work towards across each year. These are the headlines for Year 1 and Year 2 — every child develops at their own pace, and these are the milestones, not a checklist.

Year 1 — by July

Mathematics

Count to and across 100, forwards and backwards. Read and write numbers to 100 in numerals; to 20 in words. Number bonds and subtraction facts to 20. Count in 2s, 5s and 10s. Recognise halves and quarters. Tell time to the hour and half hour.

Reading

Spot patterns and predictable phrases. Re-tell familiar stories with accuracy. Make predictions, and inferences from what's said and done. Read aloud with pace and expression — pausing at full stops, lifting the voice for a question.

Writing

Write clearly demarcated sentences using capital letters and full stops. Use 'and' to join ideas, and conjunctions like 'so' and 'but' to join sentences. Form lower- and uppercase letters and digits correctly.

Year 2 — by July

Mathematics

Read, write, compare and order numbers to 100 using < > =. Multiplication and division facts for 2s, 3s, 5s and 10s. Add and subtract two-digit numbers. Recognise and write fractions including ¼, ½ and ¾. Tell time to five minutes, including quarter past and quarter to.

Reading

Read fluently with expression and intonation. Comment on plot, setting and characters in familiar and unfamiliar stories. Identify past and present tense, and explain why the writer used it. Use commas, question marks and exclamation marks to vary their reading.

Writing

Write four kinds of sentence: statement, question, exclamation, command. Use expanded noun phrases and subordination ('when', 'if', 'that', 'because'). Commas in lists; apostrophe for omission and singular possession. Consistent past and present tense.

Just for Year 1 & 2 parents

Things only you need to know.

A handful of Year 1 & 2 specifics — the phonics check in June, free school lunches across Key Stage 1, and how reading at home keeps the momentum going.

Phonics screening check

Year 1 children sit the national Phonics Screening Check in June — a short, low-key one-to-one with the class teacher, working through forty words to check decoding. Year 2 children re-take it if they didn't pass it in Year 1. We send home a parent leaflet ahead of time so you know what to expect.

Free hot lunches

Every child in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 is entitled to a free hot lunch each day under the Universal Infant Free School Meals scheme. Meals still need ordering on the FEED app (up to 8am on the day) so the kitchen knows numbers. Menus are on the School lunches page.

Reading at home

Phonics carries on daily with Song of Sounds, the same scheme children start in Reception. Children take home a phonics-matched reading book and a reading record. Ten to fifteen minutes a day at the right level does more than longer sessions at the wrong one. Use the reading record to tell us how it went — we love reading the comments.

Communication

Day-to-day messages come via SchoolPing. Anything urgent — call the school office on 01273 453176 and we'll get a message to the class teacher.
